AND HAVE YOU SEEN THE LATEST INFO ON LOW FAT FOODS? The news media have jumped on this as if it was new information but although it's important stuff, it definitely isn't new. For more than 25 years, I've been writing articles and books on the negative effects of low fat diets and low fat foods. And I'm not the only one. As long ago as the 1990s, I ranted regularly and extensively about the dangers of low fat foods and was, I have to tell you, very frequently castigated by several of the manufacturers of said products who were, I can only presume, worried about their sales. Let's be clear, by the way. Fresh produce that is naturally low in fat is NOT what we are talking about here. Nor are we complaining about healthy fats, those that have not been processed or 'chemicalized'. The concern is specifically about manufactured low fat foods, the factory-adulterated stuff that comes from packets and jars - low fat ice cream, low fat mayonnaise, low fat cheese, low fat ready meals, and so on.

In my book Superskin, first published in 1993 (can it really be that long ago?) I said this:
'The fat in your diet provides not only a rich source of concentrated energy and nourishment but is also responsible for giving food its texture and flavour. That is why many packaged low-fat foods contain fillers, binders, emulsifiers and oodles of other additives to replace the missing fat. In the pursuit of fat reduction, many people reply on processed products such as low-fat cheeses, low-fat yoghurts, reduced calorie mayonnaise . . . Whilst the official advice is that these foods are perfectly healthy, I am concerned that we may be storing up further problems for the future by swapping unadulterated (healthy) fat for additives and hydrogenated oils.' I went on to highlight the potential hazards of processed fats and oils and the risks they posed to increased rates of obesity. BOTTOM LINE?
THE LOW FAT DIET EXPERIMENT HAS FAILED
This latest newsflash isn't saying that it's ok to eat a ton of fat and you'll be healthier. But it does alert us all to the dangers of consuming too many low fat foods thinking that this will help us stay slim and reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease and most especially diabetes. It won't. In fact, full fat foods, even saturated fat, is better for you than processed low fat 'gunge'.
And AVOID SUGAR, SUGARY FOODS and TOO MANY CARBS. Mixing sugar and refined starch (i.e. white bread, white pasta, white rice) with low fat foods is a triple whammy. All are seriously bad for you.
BEST ADVICE?
Avoid as much packaged food as possible and if it claims to be 'reduced calorie', 'low in fat', 'lite', or 'helps to lower cholesterol', avoid it like a poisonous plague. If it lists the word hydrogenated or mentions emulsifiers, stablisers, or has E numbers on the label, then don't buy it. Cook with coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil and use butter for spreading. Stick with full fat mayonnaise, full fat milk and full fat yoghurt.
Consume plenty of fresh vegetable and salad foods. And just don't eat anything to excess.

Don't forget that good nutrition isn't just about health for healthy people. Improved digestion, better bowel function, balanced bodyweight, stronger immunity - all these things together are vitally important in helping to reduce the risk of disease. If properly applied, the results can be life-changing. And because the right kind of diet has, in many different situations, the capacity to relieve the symptoms of existing illness, it can also be a fantastic source of support to anyone whose general health isn't so strong.

Everyone knows someone who has taken antibiotics for an infection and then, just at the moment the course is finished, they go down with another infection. So whilst antibiotics sometimes may be the best option, if you are able to safely treat the UTI in other ways, then talk to your doctor about this possibility. It’s definitely the case with simple UTIs that home remedies, including the right kind of Vitamin C, D-mannose (see below for this fantastic helper), an increase in fluid intake, changes to the diet and a few simple hygiene updates, can eradicate the problem without recourse to antibiotics. Results of a number of different researches suggest that the right type of probiotic therapy, alone or in combination with other remedies such as D-mannose, could provide us with a truly worthwhile alternative to antibiotic treatment and a real breakthrough in the management of recurring urinary tract (and vaginal) infections. But if you're a sufferer, you do need to discuss all this with your GP in order to decide the best course of treatment.
