AHEAD OF IT'S TIME . . .
GOOD GUT BUGS
by Kathryn Marsden
Like it's 'sister' volume Good Gut Healing, Kathryn's new book Good Gut Bugs is fantastically informative as well as being superbly funny. Good Gut Bugs deals plainly but humorously with the very topical subject of probiotics (the good gut bugs inside you) and how they can help your health. It's packed with seriously useful dietary advice and has the scientific backup without the scientific boredom! It covers many important health issues, looking at which foods your good gut bugs love and which they hate. Perhaps most importantly of all it shows how best to recover quickly from antibiotics and their side-effects and tells you how to protect the body against repeated colds, respiratory infections and superbugs.
IMPORTANT: If you think you may be exposed to the norovirus or to hospital acquired infections (superbugs), or have recently been on antibiotics, then talk to your GP about taking probiotics.
WHY? First of all, there's no longer any doubt that maintaining the right level of beneficial bacteria in our intestines is incredibly important to the health of every human. That's because these mysterious microflora protect us from a whole host of nasty diseases. And there is new research being published all the time to confirm this such as the recent study which shows that emulsifiers added to processed foods upset the balance of gut bacteria and increase the risk of bowel cancer.
. . . Adding the right kind of probiotics (foods and supplements) to a good diet could be one of the best health investments a person can make. Whilst the majority of research focuses on specific problems, there are also a number of studies demonstrating that probiotics have the power to keep healthy people healthy by lessening the likelihood of catching a cold or respiratory infection, reducing absence from work and increasing the number of illness-free days.
. . . This book will show you how your health can profit from probiotics. I’ll be telling you about a whole stack of common conditions that might benefit from what we've come to think of as friendly flora. I’ll also look at why things go wrong, the problems that can be caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria, the risks associated with the ever-present problem of antibiotic resistance and how simple dietary changes and the healing properties of probiotics - with their important partners known as prebiotics - can help so much towards redressing the balance.
